TMS Therapy for Depression in Ladera Ranch CA

TMS Therapy for Depression in Ladera Ranch CA

Medications and psychotherapy have helped reduce the symptoms of depression for several people. But these are not forthcoming for everyone. An alternative treatment for depressive disorder is Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). The TMS treatment we offer at our practice is one of the best in treating depression.

What Is TMS Therapy?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive kind of brain stimulation used to alleviate the symptoms of depression. Below are some benefits of TMS therapy:

  • There are no adverse side effects.
  • TMS therapy does not require an anesthetic.
  • When the procedure is done, you can resume your daily life.

Procedure for TMS Therapy

Our specialist applies an electromagnetic coil to your forehead during our TMS therapy. The coil is used to administer electromagnetic pulses that trigger nerve cells in your brain. The coil is applied close to an area of your brain that controls mood. The magnetic field produced by the procedure is equal to an MRI scan.

Furthermore, a TMS session does not require anesthesia, and it lasts between 30 to 60 minutes. You will feel a slight tapping on your head from the pulses. Then a clicking sound for a few seconds followed by a pause. To find out the appropriate magnetic dosage, our team of experts increases the energy level until your fingers or hands begin to twitch.

If our trusted team notices side effects, we adjust the amount of stimulation. When the pulses are given in intervals, and rapidly, the treatment is referred to as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation rTMS. Our rTMS therapy involves a sequence of treatment sessions, and it usually takes a period of 4 to 6 weeks.

However, there are instances where we carry out a type of TMS called deep transcranial magnetic stimulation (dTMS), which can stimulate deeper into your brain and cover a bigger area. This treatment option depends on the type of TMS coil used and the number of pulses conveyed but usually lasted around 30 to 40 minutes. Patients receive TMS therapy five days a week. However, this can depend on how you respond to treatment.
